With modern fuel efficient vehicles government faces an issue – where should we take money? Taxes included in gas prices do not work anymore and become less profitable source of tax money. And just imagine how pivotal this problem will be when electric cars and hybrids become even more popular. That’s why many governors are looking for creative ways out.
One of them was found by San Francisco Bay officials – they are planning to tax drivers by the number of driven miles instead of numbers of burned gallons. To track the number of driven miles officials will install special GPS devices.
But, with such devices citizens could start fear for their confidentiality, if not the words of Randy Rentschler, the Commission's spokesman.
"The last thing we're interested in is where you go and what you do," Rentschler tells the Associated Press. "What we're trying to do is get people to figure out a way to raise revenue that they could support."
Do you think it is right way to tax people? Left your thoughts on the issue in the comments below.
